A Narative By a 1995 Thunderbird LX 40th Anniversary Edition

By: Malcolm Green

I was born on December 12, 1994 in the Ford plant in Loraine, Ohio, where most of my brothers and sisters were also born.

When I came outside for the first time I was put far aside from the other newly born in a place I didn’t want to be, because I was lonely now. Why was I put out here? As the sun went down I noticed that my color was changing! My goodness, what could be wrong! As night fell and lights all around came on, my color had changed again! What terrible disease was I infected with, to have this happen?

That night someone new came to me and took me over to, what they call, a retrofitting plant. It was nice and clean and they had others of my kin, black, dark green, dark blue and dark red. I changed color again!

At that time I heard an attendant remark how different my color was from all the others. He and several others came and read off my clipboard. Gee, it said my color was silver blue mist clear coat metallic, and I am opal grey inside. They worked on me for several hours. They gave me some nice extra touches that made me feel that I am a little Special. The crowning glory came when they placed two emblems on my sides indicating “40th Anniversary” and V8. I also sport a label indicating “40th Anniversary Edition” on my sides.

As I have gotten to know myself, I find that I AM SPECIAL. I’m supposed to change color. I can see the stars at night and the sun in the day through my ROOF. I am cool in the summer and warm in the winter with the twist of a dial and my lights even come on if it gets dark while I’m moving!

Several days later, I was put on a train to York, PA to be received at my new temporary home.

On May 12, 1995, I was cleaned and prettied for my new owners and their warm home. I thought I would be there forever, but talking to my kin, this is not to be, in MY world. Alas, around my third birthday I was put out in the cold waiting to find another home.

Before Christmas a man came by in a “dark green 40th Anniversary”, while smoking a pipe. He said he knew his wife would love my color, he thought my color is purple, but he already had a ‘Forty’ anyway.

To my surprise, he showed up several days later with a friend. His friend remarked that I must have had an accident, because I had different shades of paint as he walked around me. The stupid old man; I would have kicked him, if I could. I was ready to defend myself, when the kindly gentleman with the pipe straightened out his stupid old friend by telling him to appreciate my beautiful paint.

On January 5, 1999, the stupid old man took me to my new home in New Jersey. During the following years we have taken trips to Wisconsin, Michigan, and all of the Northeastern states on various International Thunderbird Club Conventions.

Although he has neglected me at times, he always comes back to me enthusiastically. My garage isn’t heated in the winter, nor is it cool in the summer, but he keeps me comfortable. When I first arrived in New Jersey, I thought he was going to leave me outside, as there didn’t seem to be enough room for all of us in his garages, but he always makes sure there is room for me.

The garages are slowly emptying, but I heard him say the other day to a friend in Virginia, that I am one of his “keepers”. Now I KNOW HE LOVES ME!!
