Since it would not be possible to come up with a detailed plan of travel for all members, here are some basic Interstate routes to Waukesha:
- From the northwest the best route is I-94 or I-90 east.
- From the west I-80 east to I-39 north.
- From the south, or southwest I-70 or I-44 to I-55, then north to I-39.
- From the southeast, take I-70 or I-65 to Indianapolis, then take I-74 into Illinois to I-39 north. This will take you west of Chicago, and you’ll merge with I-90 near Rockford, IL. Take I-90 to I-43 northeast towards Milwaukee.
- From the east and northeast, I-80 west is the quickest route. This route will take you through the Chicago area. Those wanting to avoid the Chicago area can do one of the following: Take I-80 through Ohio, go north through Michigan on I-75. Either take I-96 west to Muskegon for the Lake Express ferry, or continue north on I-75 across the Mackinac Bridge through the upper peninsula of Michigan, then south through northern Wisconsin. This would definitely be the long, scenic route!
I’m from the Chicago area, and travel there often. It’s really not as bad as some would have you believe. However, there will be some highway construction going on, and some delays are to be expected. Take a deep breath, and go through the Chicago area during the times with the least amount of heavy traffic. Those times would be between 10:00am and 2:00pm, or 8:00pm until 5:00am CST. There are two ways to go through the Chicago area:
- Stay on I-80 which will take you south of downtown Chicago. I-80 will become I-294. Stay on I-294 which becomes I-94, and follow signs towards Milwaukee.
- Take I-80 to I-90 which takes you over the Chicago Skyway toll bridge. Stay on I-90/I-94 through the city. There will be a split in the Interstate north of Chicago. I-90 will go northwest I-94 will go north. Take I-94 north.
The most important things are to plan ahead, have a good route mapped, and allow enough travel time so that you aren’t in a rush to arrive in Waukesha. Drive safely and enjoy the sights along the way, and we will look forward to seeing you when you get here!
